Collegium Wirtemberg, Württemberg Germany

Yesterday, I posted about the Wein Wanderbeg, a route I walked just outside of Stuttgart in Germany.  Outside of the walk itself with its stunning views of the vines was my tasting experience at Collegium Wirtemberg Winery.  On a warm day, I was able to sit outside take in the vines, see how much further I still had to walk (I was pretty exhausted by this point), and try these delicious wines!  As this was the first German winery I had visited, I wasn’t sure of how the experience would go, but it was just the same as if I tasting in Portugal, California, or France.

I didn’t expect Stuttgart and the Württemberg to be the amazing culinary experience that it was, but that was because I didn’t know these two things.  First, Württemberg has the highest consumption of alcohol in all of Germany.  I was surrounded by fellow wine lovers, and with wine normally comes good food!  Second, wines made in this region are made for local flavors and local tastes and since all the locals are drinking them you just don’t get to try the best of them or even hear about them.  To truly get an appreciation for these wines, you must visit the region.

The winery’s wines reflect all this local gastronomy.  Collegium Wirtemberg is a coop of about 210 different growers.  The main varietals grown include Trollinger, Lemberger, and Pinot Noir.  Value for quality of the wines was wonderful, most of the wines were under 10 euros.
