Argyrides Winery in Cyprus is located in the village of Vasa Koilaniou in Limassol. It is a family-owned winery run by Rebecca Argyrides that has been making wine for five generations. Rebecca is a lovely and amazing women that I had the pleasure of meeting. She’s passionate about Cyprus wine and wants to help make a name for it. Among other endeavors, Rebecca is trying to revive the indigenous grape of Maratheftiko, which I absolutely fell in love with.

Maratheftiko is an extremely hard grape to grow as it must be co-planted with other varieties as it does not have hermaphordite flowers (which allows for self-pollination), for this reason it is produced in very limited quantities, less than 1% of cultivated vineyards on the island. The Maratheftiko grape produces wines deep purple/ruby in color, with floral aromas, and normally hints of chocolate and tobacco. On the palate this Maratheftiko has soft and silky tannins and a long and spicy finish with good acidity.
