I was first introduced to Gary Farrell wines in 2006, the same year that Gary Farrell left wine making at his name sake. At the time, I remember thinking that it was the best value Pinot Noir around $50.00. A lot has change for the wine and the winery in the following years. When I first visited with my friend Kate in 2012 you could walk up for a tasting and sit outside with your dog. Today, it is an appointment only and offers three different tasting experiences ranging from $35-$75 dollars.
I have to say part of me mourns for the days when I could just drive up and enjoy the views with his lordship, but many wineries in the valley are growing and becoming more corporate. They are also becoming more of planned destinations and Gary Farrell is well worth you planning a visit too. The views of the Russian River are simply breathtaking. I could sit on the outside patio for days. With the addition of appointments the winery is less crowded and much more relaxing than it was in 5 to 8 years ago. Not to mention the wines made by superstar female winemaker Theresa Heredia are delicious! The only thing that keeps me from wine tasting there more is that no minors or dogs are allowed. I almost always have either his lordship or my friends daughter Ella with me, so it makes visiting very difficult!
