One of my favorite off the beaten path wine excursions was walking the Weinwanderweg just outside of Stuttgart, Germany. The Stuttgart Wine Trail leads from Obertürkheim via Uhlbach and Rotenberg to Untertürkheim. It is about 7.5 miles or 12km that will take you through beautiful vines, little villages and the amazing views of the Württemberg (wine region). You can ride bikes, but my friend and I decided that we were going to walk it! It was definitely a full day adventure, we ate lunch in a little village that was on the path, we stopped into several wine tasting rooms located in the villages, and took in what seemed like endlessly beautiful views of the valley and the vineyards making stops to take in some of the more historic sights.
Württemberg is known as German’s red wine region with most of its production being Trollinger. Other red varietals include Lemberger, Spätburgunder, and Schwarzriesling. Tomorrow’s post will feature my favorite tasting experience on the Stuttgart’s Wine Route.
There is a really great write up on the Wurrtemberg on Wine Folly. If you are ever Stuttgart, I highly suggest setting a day aside to explore the Wein Wanderbeg!
